League 2 Season Preview

The title race

Ryan LoweLast season’s title race went down to the final day and was probably the most thrilling in recent memory. The race for top spot this year has a tough act to follow but there are plenty of strong teams in with a shout. Bury are most of the bookmaker’s favourites to win the division and rightly so given the quality of their squad. Manager David Flitcroft has made some of the more impressive summer signings so far with experienced striker Ryan Lowe re-joining the club whilst goalkeeper Shwan Jalal and winger Nicky Adams have also joined and are set to be very strong players at this level. There are also plenty of quality players already at the club – the likes of defender Nathan Cameron, midfielders Andy Procter and Andrew Tutte and striker Daniel Nardiello come under that bracket – and all the signs are pointing towards Bury having a very successful season.

Luton and Portsmouth are also well in with a shout of claiming the League 2 title. Luton romped the Conference title last season,OURS scoring 102 goals and racking up 101 points, and the club have every reason to be dreaming of back-to-back promotions. The Hatters have a large squad packed with experience and quality including players such as Mark Tyler, Steve McNulty, Luke Guttridge and Paul Benson. Portsmouth were the favourites to win the league last season but are in a much better position than they were this time last year. Manager Andy Awford steered the club away from the lower reaches of the league towards the end of last season and he has recruited extremely well bringing in Craig Westcarr and Michael Poke among others to add to an already impressive squad which boasts the likes of Jed Wallace and Ricky Holmes.

Burton Play-OffsRecently relegated Shrewsbury are also in with a shout of winning League 2 and have an extremely talented squad thanks to their summer recruitment. The Shrews have brought in well-known Football League names such as Nathaniel Knight-Percival, Ashley Vincent and Liam Lawrence and have plenty more quality players in their squad. Manager Micky Mellon has experience in higher divisions and he could be the man to help Shrewsbury return to League 1 at the first time of asking, despite the loss of Jon Taylor. York and Burton are also well fancied by the bookies – Burton probably have the stronger squad and the better chance but with a few more signings to improve their strength in depth, York could be a real force this season.
