Middlesbrough face Preston North End in the third round of the Carabao Cup, and are expected to make several changes to the side that faced Swansea on Saturday.
Here is the predicted Middlesbrough starting eleven for the Carabao Cup tie at Deepdale.
GK – Andy Lonergan
Lonergan looks to be the back up to Darren Randolph, and is ahead of veteran Dimi Konstantopoulos in the pecking order. Lonergan had a good game last time out and will be looking to carry his form into the third round.
RWB – Paddy McNair
McNair is yet to start a game in the Championship, however he should start this game at Deepdale, and with the lack of full-backs, the former-Sunderland man’s versatility means he could start in defence.
CB – Dael Fry
Fry didn’t play on Saturday with Flint and Ayala deputising in central defence. The 21-year old should start from the outset at the stadium he was given his debut in 2015 aged 17.
CB – Danny Batth
Batth could be given his debut after moving to Middlesbrough from Wolves on deadline day. With Flint and Ayala playing on Saturday, it would suggest the pair would be given a rest.
CB – Nathan Wood
16-year old Nathan Wood has been mightily impressive in pre-season and in the Carabao Cup this season, and will most likely be given another chance in round three.
LWB – Sam McQueen
The on-loan Southampton man came on at left-midfield on Saturday, but he is more at home playing at left-back. He will likely come in for George Friend on Tuesday.
CM – Grant Leadbitter
Club-captain Grant Leadbitter has found playing time at a premium so far this season with plenty of competition in midfield. He will no doubt captain the side in the league cup this week however.
CM – Lewis Wing
Wing will feel hard done by to have lost his place in the team, given his performances were of high quality in the Championship’s early games – he should start this game.
CM – Marcus Tavernier
Tavernier is versatile and can play as a central midfielder, attacking midfielder or wide man. Whatever formation Pulis opts for, expect him to be given another start here.
ST – Ashley Fletcher
Tony Pulis said in his post match interview that Ashley Fletcher will play in this game, and he has been impressive in the competition so far.
ST – Rudy Gestede
Gestede is still making his way back from injury but Pulis has confirmed he will feature. Whether he will be given a start or not remains to be seen however, and Jordan Hugill could be the preferred choice instead.
