Aston Villa are interested in signing defender Steven Caulker on a free transfer, as reported by The72 yesterday.

The 27-year-old has been linked with a move to Ukrainian side Arsenal Kiev over the past few days but Villa are reportedly hoping to persuade him to stay in England.

Steve Bruce’s side are still in the hunt for another defender and there have been rumours linking them to free agents like Robert Huth, James Collins and a return of John Terry but nothing has materialised as of yet.

Caulker is an option for many clubs at the moment and he will be weighing up his options. He spent last season at Scottish Premier League outfit Dundee and impressed for them. He played 17 games in all competitions but left at the end of August.

He started his career at Tottenham Hotspur and rose through the youth ranks of the London side. He played 29 games for Spurs’ first-team and also enjoyed loan spells at Yeovil Town, Bristol City, Cardiff City and Swansea City.

Caulker then left Spurs on a permanent basis to join QPR in July 2014 for a fee of around £8 million. The Hoops were relegated during his first season at the club and he went on to spend the rest of his time at QPR on loan at Southampton and then Liverpool

Aston Villa could be his next destination and here is how their fans have reacted on Twitter to being linked with Caulker-
