Birmingham City battling with Lille for free agent goalkeeper

Birmingham City will have to see off interest from Lille if they are to land free agent goalkeeper Nikolay Mihaylov, as per a report by BirminghamLive.

The Blues have been linked with a move for the experienced shot stopper over recent weeks. They have recently loaned out David Stockdale to League One side Southend United so are considering more back-up to their current options.

Mihaylov, who has made 33 caps for Bulgaria so far in his career, left Cyprian side Onomia at the end of last season and is currently weighing up various options. He has played in England before with Liverpool from 2007 to 2010 so Birmingham will be hoping to tempt him back for another crack at the English game.

The 30-year-old started his career at Bulgarian side Levski Sofia and was snapped up by Liverpool in 2007. He never made a senior appearance for the Anfield club and was loaned out to FC Twente in 2010 before joining them permanently.

Mihaylov has since had spells at Hellas Verona in Italy, Mersin İdman Yurdu in Turkey and Onomia in Cyprus. Lille and Birmingham are now new options for the next destination of the well-travelled goalkeeper.

It will be interesting to see if Gary Monk’s side do opt to sign another option. They currently have Lee Camp as their number one, who they signed from Premier League side Cardiff City over the summer. The Blues also have highly-rated youngster Connal Trueman amongst their ranks as well.
