Blackburn Rovers duo Ben Brereton and Charlie Mulgrew featured for England Under 20s and Scotland respectively last night. However, Mulgrew had a more successful night than his new teammate, who endured a bittersweet night for the Young Lions.
It was a proud night for Blackburn Rovers’ new signing Ben Brereton last night, who made his debut for the Under 20s in their tie against the Netherlands last night. However, not all went to plan for the youngster.
Arsenal youngster Eddie Nketiah put England 1-0 up, and England won a penalty with a chance to make it 2-0. Debutant Brereton stepped up, but he couldn’t mark his debut with a goal.
The Holland youngsters took advantage of Brereton’s miss, and scored three in the second half to make it 3-1. Manchester United youngster Tahith Chong scored with under half an hour to go, before Dylan Vente and Ferdi Kadioglu scored late on to seal the win for Oranje.
Rovers skipper Charlie Mulgrew played for Scotland in their 2-0 win over Albania in their opening UEFA Nations League clash at Hampden Park. The defender was part of a solid defensive display from Alex McLeish’s men, almost providing an assist for forward Steven Naismith, who hit the post from just a yard out after Mulgrew nodded it down for the 31-year-old. The Scottish Sun called it one of the worst misses of all time.
Midfielder Corry Evans could feature this evening for Northern Ireland in their friendly against Israel. The 28-year-old has started this season in brilliant form. The mdifield maestro tops the Championship charts for interceptions and recoveries, as well as completing the second most tackles after six games.
