Former Aston Villa midfielder Khalid Abdo is on trial at Swedish side AIK, according to Birmingham Live.

The 21-year-old was released by Aston Villa at the end of the season and has been looking for a club throughout the summer.

Abdo, who is from Sweden, never made a senior appearance for Steve Bruce’s side but was regular for their Under-23’s. He made the move to Villa Park in 2012 from Lärje-Angered IF and was seen as a future star for the Midlands side when he initially made the move.

He has now gone back to his native Sweden and will be hoping to earn a contract with AIK. The Stockholm-based side have won the Allsvenskan title five times in their history. Their stadium, the Friends Arena, has a capacity of just over 50,000 and they are a well supported side.

AIK have a strong squad and will be going for their first league title since 2009 this season. They are now the home to former Birmingham City, Sunderland and Hull City midfielder Seb Larsson and former Watford, Bristol City and Rotherham United defender Joel Ekstrand.

Khalid Abdo could be the next through the door at AIK with English Championship connections. It wasn’t meant to be for him at Aston Villa but their fans will keep an eye on his progress and he now has the opportunity to get back into football with his trial in Sweden.
