Two in two – Alioski bags again as Macedonia end break top of group

Gjanni Alioksi is having an emphatic international break. He bagged his first goal against Gibraltar last week and has rounded up the weekend with another, this time a penalty to open the scoring against Armenia.

What it means is Macedonia are top of the group whatever happens in the second game tonight. Macedonia have won both games by two goals to nil and are looking good to win the group and quality for the next round. Alioski is a key player for the nation now and this international break has helped raise his stock once again after a great start to the season under Marcelo Bielsa.

Alioksi is no stranger to the international scene anymore, he’s been involved for a few years and since he was first handed his debut he has become more and more important to the set-up. The new format of the UEFA Nations League gives nations like Macedonia the perfect chance to have a crack at qualifying for a major tournament, playing against other nations of a similar standard.

What is awkward for Macedonia is they are expected to do well in this group, and that changes the landscape massively. All of a sudden they need to win games and be the side attacking, where in the majority of their international history they are the underdogs looking to grab a result. This campaign has already started so well for Macedonia and they will be looking forward to the next break.
