Bad news for Leeds United and Brentford as target inches closer to Belgium switch

Former Newcastle United winger Yasin Ben El-Mhanni was linked with several clubs throughout the summer transfer window, with Championship sides Leeds United and Brentford both keen to bring in the free agent.

However, the Daily Star reported this morning that the winger was in Antwerp yesterday for discussions about a possible move to Belgian side Royal Antwerp.

El-Mhanni has been linked with a range of clubs, including newly promoted Wolves and Italian giants Lazio.

The 22-year-old was released from Newcastle United after he made allegations of bullying and discrimination against academy coach Peter Beardsley. Despite Beardsley was discovered to have used discriminatory language and conducted himself in a ‘generally unfair’ manner towards El-Mhanni, according to The Mirror. As a result of this, the youngster was advised to reject any new contract offers from The Magpies, and so he was released at the end of the season.

The London-born youngster spent a week on trial with The Bees, playing in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Bournemouth. However, it seems El-Mhanni is more likely to move to Belgium now, with talks already taking place.

Leeds United have since brought in Chelsea youngster Izzy Brown on loan, so could have moved on from El-Mhanni, despite Marcelo Bielsa reportedly being keen on him earlier in the window.

The door has been opened for the youngster to pursue other options, and could be set for a switch to the Belgian Pro League. The Sun report that fellow Belgian side Standard Liege have made contact regarding a possible move as well.

The tricky winger rose to fame after videos of his tricks appeared on YouTube, which resulted in him becoming a double and skill consultant for Brazilian superstar Neymar and five-time Ballon D’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo.
