Leeds United star reveals he was “very close” to United States switch

Leeds United midfielder Mateusz Klich has admitted that he was close to moving to America in the summer transfer window, he has told Polish website Sportowe Fakty.

Midfielder Mateusz Klich has been playing like a completely new player since the start of the new season under Marcelo Bielsa, but has admitted that he was very close to a move away from Elland Road, as an unnamed United States side came calling back in the summer transfer window.

He told the website:

“I was very close to a transfer to the United States and it would probably be a nail in the coffin (for my chances of getting into the Polish national team). In the end, I did not leave, which I’m happy about.”

The resurgent midfielder has made good on his second chance in the Leeds United team, scoring three and assisting one goal in six Championship appearances this season. Klich’s impressive performances earned him his first call-up to the Polish national squad for the first time in four years for their upcoming matches against Italy and Republic of Ireland.

The 28-year-old also told the Polish website about how his recent first team exploits have helped him develop as a footballer and as a professional.

“I’m at the best disposal (condition) I’ve ever had in my life. A lot has changed: I have seen a lot, learned a lot and drew a lot of conclusions. At the beginning of my football adventure, I did not take a few things seriously – even food. It’s only recently that I have realised just how important it is for a football player.”

Klich was close to adding another name to the list of 24 both senior and youth players to leave Elland Road as part of Bielsa’s refurbishment of the Whites’ squad. United fans will be thrilled that Klich has stayed and turned his career around, and will be hoping that he can continue in his good form as they try to return to the Premier League.
