Feel good Friday – Leeds duo claim Championship awards

Marcelo and Kemar Roofe have completed a double win for Leeds United, picking up the manager and player of the month awards for August. This adds to Pablo Hernandez and his PFA Fans’ Player of the Month which arrived earlier this week.

Kemar Roofe has won the award after two opening man of the match awards and bagging four goals in the month of August. His transformation under Marcelo Bielsa has been quite remarkable, as has many of the players’ improvement this season already. Roofe made a real impact at Derby County in the first away game, bagging two very different goals to help secure a 1-4 win. Roofe has beaten Andreas Wiemann, Ben Alnwick and Ollie Watkins to the award.

Marcelo Bielsa has also picked up the manager of the month and how could he not? He has led the side to the top of the league, unbeaten and producing some of the best performances seen at the club for some time. The 3-1 win over Stoke City didn’t tell the full story but the Derby County demolition and romping of Norwich at Carrow Road did, and both could have been more than three goal margin wins.

Leeds have had the perfect start to the next season and on the field things have gone to plan. Players such as Patrick Bamford, Jack Harrison, Lewis Baker and Jamal Blackman have struggled to break into the side and one of the most talented signings in recent years Izzy Brown still hasn’t recovered from injury. It just shows how much Bielsa has improved the players who had failed so miserably last season. Leeds don’t often win these awards, so to win the first two of the month is a rare occasion.
