The one that got away? – Leeds United and Hull City target gets off to electric start

Leeds United and Hull City were both heavily linked with moves for Senegalese striker Mbaye Diagne, but a move for the forward failed to materialise.

Kasimpasa’s star forward Mbaye Diagne was strongly linked with a move away from the Turkish side throughout the summer transfer window, and Championship sides Leeds United and Hull City were both in for the 26-year-old.

The striker ended up staying in Turkey, and has got off to an impressive start to the Turkish Super Lig season, scoring a scintillating six goals in his first four games, taking his tally for Kasimpasa to 18 goals in 21 games since joining from Chinese side Tianjin Teda.

Leeds United haven’t suffered without the signing of the former Juventus youngster, as Marcelo Bielsa’s men sit pretty at the top of the Championship with an unbeaten league record. The Whites haven’t struggled for goals either, scoring 14 in six league games. Striker Kemar Roofe has started life under Bielsa in impressive fashion, scoring four goals, with Mateusz Klich and Pablo Hernandez both scoring three each too.

At the other end of the spectrum, Hull City could have really done with the arrival of the prolific Diagne. The Tigers are currently in 21st place, and have scored just six goals in six games – a worse record than Diagne alone, who has six in four.

City’s top scorer at the moment is a tie between former Manchester United striker Frazier Campbell and Australia international Jackson Irvine, who both sit on two goals in all competitions.

Turkish Football reported that Leeds United did hold talks with the Senegalese striker’s representatives, but the 26-year-old was not granted a work permit, hence why he remained in Turkey. However, the striker has responded in impressive fashion, picking up where he left off last season. The striker has continued his superb goalscoring record in the new season, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Whites and the Tigers return for the forward in January.

Diagne remains keen to move to England when the transfer window opens again in January, and both Leeds and Hull could have some more competition for the forward if he keeps up his current form.
