Steven Gerrard confirms deal for Nottingham Forest defender

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has confirmed that Nottingham Forest defender Joe Worrall is set to join the Scottish side on a loan deal after his side’s 1-1 draw against Russian side FC Ufa.

Nottingham Forest manager Aitor Karanka has confirmed that a loan deal would be ideal for the youngster, in order for him to get some vital game-time and experience at a competitive level.

Last week, Karanka said: “If Joe wants to go and it is the right place for him to play and all of us agree that it is the right thing for everyone – I would understand that. But if he is going to a place and he is not going to play, he would learn more here by staying here and being around Dawson, Fox, Hefele and Tobias.

“It will be difficult for him this season. To try to achieve something, you need experienced players. That is the reason why we signed players like Dawson and Hefele and why we have players like Danny Fox playing now.”

The Daily Record reported that a number of Championship sides were keen on bringing in Worrall on loan. Aston Villa, West Brom and Stoke City were all linked with a move for the youngster, but he looks set to complete a loan deal North of the border tomorrow.

Gerrard said:

“In terms of Joe, it’s good news. As we were playing he should have signed a deal to be a Rangers player for a year.”

Worrall has been on the books at Forest since the age of the age of 14, and spent five years in the academy before breaking through into the first team in the 2016/17 Championship season. At just 21, the defender has played 56 games for Nottingham Forest, making 31 League appearances last season.

The youngster has also represented England, playing for the U20s and U21s. He captain of the England U20s side that won the Toulon Tournament in France last year, and was named as the second best player in the tournament after teammate David Brooks.
