Leeds United flop set to end Elland Road horror spell

Leeds United’s Vurnon Anita is close to sealing a loan move away from Elland Road, with Dutch side Willem II set to seal the signing of the Dutchman, according to NOS.

Vurnon Anita only arrived from Newcastle United last summer, but looks to be the next face to exit Elland Road as part of Marcelo Bielsa’s refurbishment of his Leeds United squad.

Anita has only made 22 appearances in his brief spell at United, and looks to bring an abrupt end to his Leeds United nightmare. The Dutchman is one of a few faces Bielsa will be hoping to see the back of before the deadline closes tomorrow, with midfielder Eunan O’Kane also being strongly linked with a move away.

In his time at United, Anita has mainly featured as a full-back, but hardly played beyond the early stages of the season. He played in 11 of the Whites’ first 14 games, but only featured another eight times after that, as United’s promotion charge faltered.

Anita joined United after five years at St. James’ Park with Newcastle United, where he made 155 appearances. He joined after Rafa Benitez deemed him surplus to requirements as The Magpies won promotion back to the Premier League in 2017. He joined the Whites on a three-year deal, coming in under then-manager Thomas Christiansen, but fell out of favour and only featured six times under Paul Heckingbottom. He is yet to play a single second under Bielsa, and that looks unlikely to change.

The 29-year-old is set for a move back his home land in the Netherlands, with Eredivisie side Willem II willing to give the versatile Dutchman a route out of Leeds before the window slams shut.
