Leeds United ‘mystery’ loan signing – name confirmed by journalist

Leeds United fans are getting used to life, and sparkling football, under Marcelo Bielsa at Elland Road. It’s a far cry from how last season ended for the Whites.

What Bielsa has done is given the fans that style of attacking football that they have been craving for a while, football that has taken them to the top of the table. However, these fans have also had to get used to a Bielsa-insisted trimmed down squad – trimmed down to encourage a healthy playing appetite.

Some fans are not overly keen on this, saying that a small squad stretches players to the extremes, opening them up to fatigue over a tough, 46-game Sky Bet Championship season. This thin-squad mentality, coupled with the toughness of the Championship has led to many fans clamouring that the club pad out the squad more.

Only two permanent signings, Barry Douglas and Patrick Bamford, have been brought it, but they’ve been augmented by a triptych of loan deals in Jack Harrison, Jamal Blackman and Lewis Baker. That was during the transfer window that closed earlier this month, there’s also been conjecture that another signing would be made during the loan window which closes tomorrow.

Journalist Phil Hay teased earlier that the Whites were looking to bring in a ‘young’ attacking midfield player to provide a degree of competition for the impressive Samu Saiz. With some fans thinking this might be Yaya Toure, it took the sleuthing skills of Whites supporters to stake out Leeds/Bradford Airport – snapping pictures that revealed the mystery figure to be Chelsea striker Isiah Brown.

Now Phil Hay has taken to Twitter to confirm the news, as well as going some way to allay Leeds fans’ fears about the injury they fear he is carrying:

The 21-year-old Peterborough-born youngster has not only international pedigree with 36 England youth international appearances (10 goals), but he also has experience on a wider scale than that. He’s featured in loan deals away from Stamford Bridge at Vitesse Arnhem, Rotherham United, Huddersfield Town and Brighton and Hove Albion.

In the Premier League with Brighton, youngster Brown featured in 15 games without troubling the scores, although he was more successful in two spells in the SkyBet Championship. In 20 games for Rotherham he managed three goals and five assists and added five goals and an assist in 21 games for Huddersfield Town in their promotion campaign.

The 21-year-old comes in to Leeds United with the Whites looking to consolidate their position at the top of the table with a hoped-for victory on Friday at Elland Road against rivals Middlesbrough. They then head in to the first international break, an ideal time for Chelsea youngster Brown to arrive and get up to speed with the Bielsa style of play.
