Sheffield Wednesday star pens new contract until 2021

Sky Bet Championship side Sheffield Wednesday have revealed that midfielder Barry Bannan has penned a new contract with the club. His initial deal was due to expire at the end of the current season, but the Scottish international has signed terms to remain at Hillsborough until the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

The 28-year-old has been a huge success since moving to the Owls in 2015. He joined at that stage on an initial one-year contract, but he has today signed an extension which would see him reach six-years with the football club at least. Bannan has made over 100 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday, and is very much one of the first names on Jos Luhukay’s team sheet.

The former Crystal Palace man has been the subject of transfer speculation in recent times, which comes naturally for top players whose contracts are beginning to run out. News that he will be staying serves as a huge boost to fans of Sheffield Wednesday, who also saw Lucas Joao pen a new deal as well.

Recent displays suggest that there was little doubt that Bannan would extend his stay in Sheffield. He produced an already early contender for goal of the season when finding the top corner in the recent 2-1 home victory versus Millwall. Highlights of that game can be found by clicking here.

He has played for some big clubs throughout his career, such as Aston Villa, where he came through the ranks, as well as Derby County and Leeds United in brief loan spells.
