Aston Villa linked with surprise late move for Chelsea’s England international

Chelsea centre-back Gary Cahill is being linked with a surprise return to former club Aston Villa, according to Birmingham Live.

Aston Villa could eye up a move for Chelsea centre-back Gary Cahill in the final days of the transfer window, Birmingham Live are reporting.

32-year-old Cahill could be one of a few players to leave Stamford Bridge before the deadline on Friday, with midfielder Danny Drinkwater also being linked with a move away from Chelsea. Villa have been linked heavily with some late action in the transfer window, and Cahill isn’t the first Chelsea player to be linked with a move to Villa park this summer.

Cahill hasn’t featured for The Blues this season, and was left out of their matchday squad completely for their 2-1 win against Newcastle United at St James’ Park. Villa aren’t the only side looking at the possibility of bringing in Cahill. Turkish side Galatasaray have been credited with interest in the centre-back, and reports suggest Villa are ready to rival Galatasaray for Cahill’s signature.

Cahill isn’t the first Chelsea player to be linked with a move to Villa Park this summer. Youngster Tammy Abraham has been strongly linked with Villa, but in the past few days he has revealed he is set to stay at Stamford Bridge to try and fight for a place in the first team.

Villa manager Steve Bruce will be keen to bring in defensive reinforcements before the window closes. Mile Jedinak has been playing at centre-back alongside James Chester in the first few games of the season. The only other senior centre-backs at the club are Tommy Elphick and Axel Tuanzebe – who is in on loan from Manchester United.

Villa’s new Egyptian investors are allowing Bruce to bring in reinforcements after losing key defenders last season, with John Terry, Micah Richards and Chris Samba leaving Villa Park at the end of last season.
