Crystal Palace midfielder free to leave with Middlesbrough poised to land loan deal

Middlesbrough are still looking to bring one or two loan signings through the door before the window closes for good on Friday and have identified a number of targets to bring in.

One of Middlesbrough’s targets is Crystal Palace attacking midfielder Jason Puncheon, who has since been told he is allowed to leave the club by manager Roy Hodgson, according to a report in The Evening Standard this week.

Puncheon is still recovering from a cruciate ligament injury, which has kept him out of action since December 2017, and upon returning to full fitness, may still find it difficult to get into the first team squad. Since the injury, Palace have signed the likes of Jeffrey Schlupp and Max Meyer, putting Puncheon further down the pecking order.

With the 32-year old being told he is surplus to requirements, and will not get regular football at the club this season, he may look to play his football elsewhere, at least on a short-term basis for now. Middlesbrough remain interested, and given manager Tony Pulis worked with Puncheon at Palace during the 2013-14 campaign, the existing relationship could persuade the midfielder to join the Teessiders.

No other clubs have expressed an interest as yet, and Middlesbrough look to be the favourites in signing the attacking midfielder, and the Championship side will be hoping to get a deal over the line before the end of the week.

Puncheon played his first competitive game for Palace since 2017 last night, as they beat Swansea City 1-0 in the Carabao Cup.
