Sheffield Wednesday Player Ratings Vs Ipswich Town

Sheffield Wednesday were able to grind out a 2-1 win over 10-man Ipswich Town to claim their second win in a row.

The Owls were hoping to get some momentum going after beating Millwall on Wednesday night while Ipswich are still looking for their first win of the season after losing to Derby County during the week.

And Wednesday got off to the best start when Lucas Joao headed in from a corner, but Ipswich did rally back after this and Aristote Nsiala was able to head in, taking advantage of the Owls defence being paralyzed following a second ball, though they did claim it should have been ruled out due to offside. Nsiala was the centre of controversy again when he was sent off for a too footed challenge on Fernando Forestieri, though that was again disputed. Shortly after that, Wednesday got the lead again with Joao scrappily putting it in following a corner.

It was a good result for a club that has had mostly bad news since the start of the season. But how did the players perform? Here are our match ratings.

Cameron Dawson – 7

Dawson is really improving as the season progresses. His distribution is still spotty, but today saw another commanding performance from him. He made some crucial saves and was able to claim the ball in some scrappy circumstances.

Liam Palmer – 8

One of the best performances Palmer has put in recent years. Being dropped from the team following a poor performance in the opening day loss to Wigan Athletic has done him wonders as he was impressive on Wednesday night and was better today. He was rock solid as a right-back and contributed a lot going forward as well. His top moment was when he streched across goal to clear a shot off the line.

Tom Lees – 7

Another solid performance from Lees. Really not much to say here.

Jordan Thorniley – 7

Who needs to sign Danny Batth or Michael Hector? Thorniley was great again today and made a crucial challenge towards the game which stopped an Ipswich striker from going clear and likely scoring. A great academy graduate in the making.

Matt Penney – 7

Another great academy graduate! His positioning at such a young age is great, he always seems to be in the right spot at the right time. The only issue I had, and the reason he’s not an 8, is because he does seem to misjudge the ball sometimes when it floats in the air and that gave Ipswich the ball back a few times.

Marco Matias – 6

Matias took a while to get into the game but ended up being a good performer towards the end of the first half. However for reasons I’m not quite sure of, he was pushed to be a more of an out-and-out striker in the second half and he was much poorer then.

Joey Pelupessy – 7

A much better performance from Pelupessy but he did still miss some passes which helped Ipswich keep the pressure on at times.

Barry Bannan – 6

Bannan is talented and certainly did some impressive things in this game. But his attempts to get the game by the scruff of the neck were frustrating. He tried to keep the ball too much and simply run through the Ipswich defence even though he could have passed to team mates in space. If it had worked he’d have been hailed as a genius, but it didn’t and instead it was irritating.

Adam Reach – 6

An anonymous game from him today.

Atdhe Nuhiu – 6

Sometimes Nuhiu can be like this, in that he struggled to make anything stick or do anything for the team. But he was better when Forestieri came on so avoids the 5.

Lucas Joao – 8

Back with a bang! Neither of Joao’s goals were pretty but it doesn’t matter how they go in as long as they go in. He was a bit anonymous other than the goals but they are the most important part of the game so he gets this rating!

Fernando Forestieri – 7

Changed the game when he came on. The Ipswich defence obviously feared him which is why Nsiala went in on him like he did, and it was that which turned the game in the Owls advantage.

Steven Fletcher – 6

Slipped over when he could have scored.
