Sheffield Wednesday in for ‘key target’ defensive duo

It’s been a miserable summer for Sheffield Wednesday, having been under a transfer embargo since April. The ban has since been lifted and the Sheffield club has already identified their key targets.

According to the Sheffield Star, Jos Luhukay wants to bolster his defence and has targeted two Premier League defenders with plenty of Championship pedigree.

The two players in question are Chelsea’s Michael Hector and Wolves captain Danny Batth. The former joined Chelsea in 2015 in what was a shock transfer, to say the least, having been signed purely for his potential resale value. Having largely struggled since then, with loans to Reading, Frankfurt and Hull City, Hector will be on the move very soon and a move to Sheffield seems very likely.

Danny Batth, on the other hand, is fresh of a title-winning campaign with Wolves, but the centre-half only managed nine appearances all season in the league. Once a cult-hero at Molyneux, Batth has been criticised plenty in recent times for poor performances and a move away from the club whom he has spent nine years seems best for both parties.

As for Sheffield Wednesday, they find themselves in a state of decline, the Owls finished 15th last season, off the back of two consecutive playoff defeats in 2015-16 and 2016-17. The clubs transfer embargo was a result of said failings, having overspent during their stint near the top to no success.

Jos Luhukay enjoyed a massive midweek win against Millwall to get their Championship campaign up an running and next up they face Ipswich Town, who themselves are winless in the League under Paul Hurst.
