Marcelo Bielsa will look to Leeds’ under 23’s this season – Who to keep an eye on

Marcelo Bielsa is a unique coach, that much has become obvious in his short time at Leeds United. He is obsessed with football, a wonderful thing for the club and the fans and he loves tradition, the idea of Leeds having a great history and the potential. The fact he loves a small squad has been raised time and time again, but he’s given his answer.

Bielsa wants a small and lean squad, he’s said it since day one and he’s stuck by that. Sixteen players have left the club and just five have arrived, quite remarkable really. The under 23’s are a crucial part of Leeds United, the academy as a whole is, and Bielsa is going to use it. So far we’ve seen Jamie Shackleton not only debut for the club but change position, now a right-back and firmly in the plans, but what other players are potentially going to get a chance under Bielsa?

Ryan Edmondson – Striker – Edmondson is on the fringes of the first-team now, Marcelo Bielsa has spoken about him on a few occasions and Leeds fans have high hopes. At just 17 he looks like he’s fully developed physically, he’s a monster for that age and he has all the ability needed to make it. Powerful and brilliant in front of goal, we may get to see him against Preston on Tuesday.

Conor Shaughnessy – Centre-back – Shaughnessy has been the most mentioned behind Jamie Shackleton by Marcelo Bielsa. The young Irish defender, or defensive midfielder clearly possesses talent but he needs to be moulded. Very good and composed on the ball but seems to be better at the back than in midfield. Sure to get used this season at some stage.

Jack Clarke – Winger – For me he is the one who will come into the plans this season at some stage, and make a huge impact. He has so much ability on the ball and in time he will get his chance. He oozes confidence and the ball seems to stick to his feet. He comes off the left and nobody really knows what’s next. Unpredictable.

Jordan Stevens – Central midfielder/winger – Another who has been used out of position in pre-season but has excelled. He has been used wide and he looks like a real player. Leeds parted with a decent amount of cash for the youngster, arriving from Forest Green and heading straight into the under 23’s.

Sam Dalby – Striker – Dalby seems to be the number one choice for the strikers role in the under 23’s. Edmondson is closer to the first-team than Dalby but the youngster is definitely in the thoughts of Bielsa. He was played through pre-season and grabbed a goal at York City. He started the season well for the development side, bagging twice in the 2-1 win over Coventry.
