Talented Leeds United youngster has “practically closed” transfer move

Young Spanish midfielder-cum-defender Oriol Rey came to Leeds Untied as one of those early Victor Orta attempts to restock the depleted ranks of the Under-23s. Now he’s reported to be on the move again according to Manuel Noeda on Twitter (tweet below).

Rey came to Elland Road ahead of last season, arriving at the Whites from the azulgrana of Barcelona, coming up through their famed La Masia academy system. However, after a season developing at Elland Road under Carlos Corberan’s considered eye, it seems a return to Spain is in order:

Noeda’s tweet (above) basically states that Spanish 2º División B side UB Conquense “has practically closed the transfer” of Rey from Leeds United to the Spanish side who are based in Cuenca, in Spain’s Castilla La Mancha region.

Rey started out as a defensive midfielder for the Barcelona youth side, graduating first to the Juvenil B set-up at the Catalan giants in July 2014. From then it was a promotion to the Juvenil A side where he played the most minutes in the run to the semi-final stage of the 2016/17 UEFA Youth League competition.

In this run to the semis, and a 2-1 defeat to Red Bull Salzburg’s youngsters, Rey came up against sides put out by the likes of Borussia Monchengladbach and Borussia Dortmund as well as against Celtic and the highly regarded youngsters at Manchester City.

The youngster featured in Leeds United’s first team squad last season and will be hoping to follow fellow Under-23 players such as Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Paudie O’Connor and Tom Pearce in to the first team proper.

20-year-old Rey, who has converted into a classy midfielder for the young Whites, will continue his development at Elland Road – his freshly signed new terms seeing him through to the end of the 2019/20 season.

Such were the consistency of his efforts in Carlos Corberan’s Under-23 side at Elland Road that the youngster has been rewarded with a new two-year deal at the club as per the Leeds United website.

However, should Noeda’s tweet have any depth to it, youngster Rey’s time in England could be coming to an end. This would seem a touch strange, what with him appearing on the bench for Leeds United last night in their hard-fought 2-2 draw away at Swansea City.
