Sporting Lisbon interested in West Brom defender, not Dawson

According to Portuguese publication Record, West Bromwich Albion full back Kieran Gibbs is interested in joining Sporting Lisbon, who are keen on signing up the former Arsenal defender. Gibbs has began the new season as the first choice left back under Darren Moore, scoring in Saturday’s 7-1 home victory against Queens Park Rangers.

Gibbs has started every Sky Bet Championship match this season so far, and Moore will not be keen on letting one of his experienced players go. However, it would not be as much of an issue if he did move on as it would have been prior to Conor Townsend signing from Scunthorpe United in the transfer window.

Several players continue to be linked with transfers away from The Hawthorns. Craig Dawson, Jay Rodriguez, Nacer Chadli and Jake Livermore are just some of those touted with the exit door. Gibbs is the latest but it remains to be seen if any such deal will go through.

Perhaps Gibbs wishes to test himself again at the highest level, having been relegated out of the Premier League, where he has spent practically his entire playing career. Sporting Lisbon will be in European competition next season as well, which is one positive for any potential move. West Brom fans however would like to see him stay on after a productive start to the new campaign.

The 28-year-old moved to the Baggies in 2017 in a £7million deal from Arsenal. It is unlikely West Brom would recoup as much as that if they did agree to sell him now. Nevertheless, a loan deal with a view to a permanent switch in a possibility too.
