Former Charlton Athletic starlet in £22m transfer race

According to The Independent, German side Red Bull Leipzig are ready to splash the cash to land former Charlton starlet Ademola Lookman. To do so the German club have made a much improved £22million bid for his services.

20-year-old Lookman, who impressed during his half-season on loan in the German 1.Bundesliga last time out, is definitely in the sights of Leipzig. the German side seem to prefer to invest in youth, their squad has an average age of just 23.5 years. After having bids of £12million and £14million knocked back by Everton, the Germans seem determined to get their man.

Whilst on loan in German, England Under-21 international Lookman played in just 11 1.Bundesliga games, but more importantly scored five goals and provided four assists. It is this kind of output and return that the Independent say “has made his signing a priority this summer” for manager Ralf Rangnick – a signing where Leipzig are said “hopeful” that their increased offer, a club record, “will be enough to get their man.”

Lookman started out at London side Charlton in 2014, singing on for the youth set-up at the Valley after six years at junior club Waterloo FC. He was promoted from the Under-18s to the full Charlton set-up ahead of the 2015/16 season and went on to make 24 appearances that season, scoring five times and providing one assist.

Sides from higher up the football pyramid began to take note, and his 2016/17 performances in the Sky Bet League One (21 games/five goals/two assists) helped to convince Everton that his future lay with them. Everton paid £8million to bring Lookman to Goodison Park, where has featured 24 times, scoring three goals.

With Everton signing Brazilian wingers Bernard and Richarlison, Lookman has definitely dropped down the pecking order at Everton, Red Bull Leipzig will fancy getting their man as they can likely guarantee him more first-team opportunities.
