The Sun understands that Bolton Wanderers are to submit a loan bid for Derby County striker David Nugent. The 33-year-old scored at the weekend for the Rams after they lost at Millwall, but Phil Parkinson believes he can persuade the player to make the move.
Parkinson believes that the recent signings of Martyn Waghorn and Jack Marriott may potentially restrict Nugent’s game time over the season. The 33-year-old will still feel as though he has a couple of years left of being able to offer plenty at this level. Frank Lampard however has shown no strong desire to move him on, with out strikers Cameron Jerome and Chris Martin deemed much lower down the pecking order.
Nugent, who has played for the likes of Leicester City, Middlesbrough, Portsmouth and Burnley, is said to be on a fairly substantial wage at Pride Park. Bolton, who have had their financial struggles in recent years, won’t be able to match that, but could offer half of what he is earning at present.
Bolton are looking to boost their forward line after surprisingly losing Adam Le Fondre to Sydney FC recently. The club announced that deal on Twitter during their EFL Cup defeat to Leeds United last week.
Nugent is a proven goalscorer at Sky Bet Championship level and remains an attractive proposition for any side playing at that level. Moving to Bolton would see him become one of the main players in the team, whilst he could be rotated in the striker role should he stay at Derby. He’ll have a decision to make potentially, although Lampard may not want to lose him just yet.
