Rangers ‘in the frame’ for £12million Aston Villa striker

The Daily Record believes that Rangers are ‘in the frame’ to sign forgotten Aston Villa striker Ross McCormack. The 32-year-old, who moved to Villa Park in 2016 for £12million from Fulham, has also attracted the attentions of Sunderland.

The player is still on an incredibly high £40,000-a-week contract, of which there is still two more years to run. Villa have tried desperately hard to get him off this deal and out of the football club, but to no joy so far. Rangers are looking into the prospect of a loan switch, although any move they may could be dependent on the injury situation to Jamie Murphy.

Several other clubs in the English leagues are showing an interest in the forward, who spent time out on loan at Australian A League side Melbourne City last season. He finds himself out of favour under Steve Bruce after the pair fell out when the Scot said he was unable to attend training due to the security gates at his house failing to open.

McCormack is no stranger to Rangers too given that he came through the youth setup at Ibrox, before moving south of the border in a loan move to Doncaster Rovers in 2006. The key for him now is to simply get back playing again, and Aston Villa will be more than happy to finally get him off the wage bill once and for all. There is still a talented player in him, as proved during his time in Melbourne last season, and the key is getting him fit again, and ultimately playing week in, week out.
