Sunderland plot move for talented Celtic midfielder

The Scottish Sun believes that Sunderland are hoping to sign Celtic midfielder Ryan Christie on loan, with the view of signing him permanently in the January transfer window. The 23-year-old is out of contract with Brendan Rodgers’ side at the end of the current season, a deal which will not be extended.

Christie has struggled to make an impact at Celtic since signing for the Scottish giants in 2015, having always been behind others in the pecking order for his position. He would enjoy two extremely productive loan spells with rivals Aberdeen in the Ladbrokes Premiership, which then saw his stock in the game begin to rise. Those exploits however have not been offer to force Rodgers into playing his more often. This could be to the benefit of Jack Ross.

The player joined Celtic in a £500,000 deal from Inverness and the club are hoping to recoup as much of that as possible in January. Sunderland, of Sky Bet League One, are a side that are very interested in the player, with them willing to snap him up on loan now and conclude a full-time switch in a few months’ time. Ross still wishes to add to his squad, despite a relatively strong start to the new season.

Christie may not be a key player with his current club right now but he has already appeared off the bench in UEFA Champions League qualifiers versus Alashkert and Rosenborg this season already. Celtic have since entered qualifiers for the UEFA Europa League, which they resume this Thursday against Suduva of Lithuania.
