Stoke line up £6.5million Championship midfielder swoop

Sky Sports is of the understanding that Stoke City are interested in Brentford central midfielder Ryan Woods. The club are looking into the possibility of loaning the player now, and then signing him up permanently in a 6.5million switch.

Woods have become an important player at Griffin Park ever since his 2005 move from Shrewsbury Town. He has endured something of a disrupted campaign so far, having only made one solitary EFL Cup appearance. The reason for this is that he was involved in a lengthy transfer saga with Swansea City, and Bees boss Dean Smith felt it was right now to involve him in their games prior to the closure of the transfer window for permanent dealings.

It is believed that £6.5million is a fee that Brentford would deem acceptable and certainly worthy of a player of the calibre of their 24-year-old midfield player. Swansea failed to reach these kind of heights, which opens up the prospect of him completing a switch to the bet365 Stadium. Gary Rowett still wants some new faces before the closure of the loan window on August 31st following a stuttering start to the Sky Bet Championship season.

Woods have played just shy over 130 matches for the club since joining, but it would appear it is looking increasingly likely he won’t extend that tally. He would join up with quite a star-studded Stoke roster for a team in the English second tier. There is the likes of Joe Allen, Darren Fletcher and Sam Clucas also vying for a spot in this role. Players such as Charlie Adam and Giannelli Imbula seemingly have no future at the club.
