Middlesbrough interested in loan-move for Southampton defender Matt Targett

Middlesbrough missed out on plenty of summer targets this past transfer window, but are still looking to bolster their squad with the acquisition of loan signings before the August 31st deadline.

Left-back is a position Middlesbrough want to strengthen, with George Friend the only recognised left-back at the club. In recent weeks, Boro have been linked with a move for Sam McQueen from Southampton and Everton’s Cuco Martina, who has now ultimately joined Stoke City on loan.

According to The Yorkshire Post, Middlesbrough manager Tony Pulis has now identified McQueen’s teammate Matt Targett as someone he would like to delve into the market for. The full-back spent last season out on loan at Fulham in the Championship and was a key part of their squad as they achieved promotion to the Premier League via the Play Offs.

Ryan Bertrand is the vice-captain at St Mary’s and is the first-choice left-back in the side. Targett will have a tough time trying to budge Bertrand from the starting eleven, and may look for a loan move away for vital playing time. However, it is possible Targett could stay at the Saints to fight for his place.

Fulham made a bid in the region of £15 million on deadline day for Targett, but the fee was rejected by Southampton outright, with the Cottagers instead signing Bristol City’s Joe Bryan.

The report in The Yorkshire Post also suggests Aston Villa are set to provide competition for Boro in the pursuit of the England under-21 full-back.
