Promotion only target for Stevenage says Whelpdale

Stevenage midfielder Chris Whelpdale believes promotion is the only aim for Stevenage this season.

The 27 year-old signed from Gillingham this summer and is one of 12 new signings for the Hertfordshire club, as they prepare for League Two.

There’s only one aim this season and that is to get out of this league,” said the midfielder, talking to The Advertiser.

“That’s been drilled into us from day one and that’s what we want to achieve. We have definitely got enough quality.”

“We have been together for a few weeks now but everyone has hit it off so well. Day in, day out in training and it has been paying off already,” he said.

“The communication between everyone is brilliant, very organised. The gaffer is drilling that into us.”

Whelpdale, who scored 20 goals in 103 appearances for Gillingham, has also given himself a personal goal for the season.

“I want to get 10 plus goals this year. I have done that before and I want to do that again.”

Stevenage continue their pre-season with a trip to Chesham United tomorrow before hosting Reading next Tuesday.
