In the last few years we’ve gone on some fantastic runs as the season has started or during at some stage, under Garry Monk and Thomas Christiansen. Both made the mistake of not rotating, when this was done in the latter stages players got leggy, in the early stages those not involved became frozen out. We have to avoid both.
Potential Leeds XI
GK – Baily Peacock-Farrell – 1 – Was in fine for at Elland Road on s\Saturday afternoon. Going 0-1 behind to Rotherham and the way they would have sat behind the ball wasn’t a good idea. He made sure that didn’t happen with a point-blank save.
RB – Luke Ayling – 2 – Ayling is one of those players who have burnt out as the season has gone on in recent years and last season he was injured as he was played every game over the winter period despite having other options. I would play him tomorrow and rest him at Norwich on Saturday.
CB – Gaetano Berardi – 28 – My man of the match on Saturday and between himself, Cooper and Jansson it can be rotated over the next few games. I’ll say it again, I would like to see players rotated so everyone is playing some games, because throwing people in (Klich at Cardiff last season an example) isn’t ideal.
CB – Liam Cooper – 6 – With the injury to Jansson it means that Cooper and Berardi will almost definitely be starting again tomorrow. The partnership has been very good so far, Swansea will be a big test, Oli McBurnie will be a very tricky player to mark.
LB – Barry Douglas – 3 – Douglas had a quiet game for his standards on Saturday but was solid at the back. This game will give him an opportunity to bomb on, Swansea will stand off at times and will make the pitch big.
DM – Kalvin Phillips – 23 – Phillips has been very good this season. I didn’t think he was at his best on Saturday despite seeing so much of the ball, but he certainly wasn’t an issue. Swansea’s strongest area is the midfield, he’ll need to be on it tomorrow.
CM – Mateusz Klich – 43 – Very, very important role tomorrow because he’ll need to give Phillips support. Swansea are very good at keeping the ball, so are we, it’s a game of chess tomorrow and Klich is an important player.
CAM – Samu Saiz – 14 – Getting Saiz on the ball tomorrow shouldn’t really be an issue. Swansea will want to play us at our own game and that means tactically and keeping the ball. I can’t see them stifling Saiz like Rotherham did.
RW – Jack Harrison – 22 – As I keep saying we need to keep players fresh. Gjanni Alioksi gets through some serious work and giving him a rest isn’t the worst idea for me. Players need to be given time, and not just in cup games. Harrison seems a very talented player. Only change I would make.
LW – Pablo Hernandez – 19 – Hernandez returns to Swansea in a big game for himself. You always want to beat your former team and Hernandez will be no different. Didn’t have a huge influence on Saturday but has been very good this season.
ST – Kemar Roofe – 7 – Has been in sensational from this season. Three goals and I couldn’t tell you which one I liked the most. All so brilliant in very different ways.
