Former Aston Villa centre-back John Terry is rumoured to be a transfer target of Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon according to reports by Birmingham Live.

The 37-year-old Barking-born defender has been without a club since leaving Villa Park at the end of last season following Villa’s failure to win promotion back to the English Premier League.

Terry has been linked with various media roles including a position in the Sky Sports studio and as a pundit for an Egyptian broadcaster, however, it has now been reported that the player could continue his career on the pitch with Sporting Lisbon ready to offer him a contract.

Reports from Portugal have indicated that Terry has held talks with a well-respected figure within the Sporting Lisbon hierarchy and the Primeira Liga club could be set to offer the former England and Chelsea man a deal at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

Terry signed a one-year deal with Aston Villa last summer after leaving former club Chelsea. The veteran centre-back made 36 appearances in all competitions for Villa, scoring one goal as the club reached the Sky Bet Championship play-off final before being defeated by eventual winners Fulham at Wembley.

The defender spent 22 years of his career with Chelsea where he won five league titles, eight domestic cups and both the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.
