Leeds youngster being coached by Bielsa, and learning from Barry – The future is bright

Tom Pearce took up much of the early summer chat amongst Leeds United fans. Would he or wouldn’t he stay with interest from his former club Everton, Bournemouth and even Crystal Palace. He penned a new four-year-deal with the club and is now in an ideal situation for his development.

It may not be ideal in that he won’t be playing as much football as he would have liked but he will get chances and he has the perfect situation for him behind the scenes. Marcelo Bielsa, one of the most exciting coaches on the planet is now mentoring him every day, like the others youngsters at the club and that is something the likes of Tom Pearce, Jamie Shackleton and co. could only have dreamed of last season when the club was struggling.

Barry Douglas, a quality player for Pearce to be learning from

Bielsa has bought into the Leeds United youth system and has made it very clear he’ll use the youngsters at the club before making new signings. Tom Pearce is the back-up to Barry Douglas and Jamie Shackleton to Luke Ayling down the other side. The attacking style that Bielsa uses for his full-backs, almost playing them as wing-backs is right up the street of Tom Pearce. A wicked left-foot and a player who loves to bomb forward and get into the final third, Bielsa Ball will be right up his street.

Pearce is behind Scotland international and the best left-back in the division in Barry Douglas. That may restrict him to less football but he is now learning off a player who had fourteen assists last season, the most in the division, and from a wing-back position. Douglas is very similar in style to Pearce, likes to get forward and can whip a ball into the box. Pearce will be absorbing the Douglas mould and that will only benefit him in the long run.

Pearce has already received international recognition, heading to the Toulon tournament with the England under 23’s in the summer and coming home a winner. His stock is on the rise and he fitted straight back in on Tuesday, showing both defensive and attacking talent during the game against Bolton.
