Posh’s best performers in cup defeat – Queens Park Rangers 2-0 Peterborough United: Player Ratings

Championship side Queens Park Rangers defeated Peterborough United 2-0 last night in the First Round of this season’s Carabao Cup, as Posh failed to emulate their league form.

Peterborough United came into the tie, feeling optimistic after two league wins in their first two games. However, it wasn’t to be. QPR came flying out of the blocks, scoring twice inside just six minutes. Luke Freeman put The Hoops ahead after two minutes, and Pawel Wszolek added a second four minutes later.

Posh put on a much better performance in the second half, causing problems from set pieces, and substitute Jason Cummings had a great chance to pull one back.

QPR’s much changed side ran out 2-0 victors, sending the 706 Posh fans home disappointed, contrasting heavily to the optimism they felt before kick off after their 4-1 romp at Spotland over Rochdale.

Player Ratings
Peterborough United

Aaron Chapman – 5 – Could have parried Conor Washington’s cross away from the waiting Luke Freeman for the first goal, but defended corners well.

Jason Naismith – 6 – The Scotsman did a good job at defending the pacey Bright Osayi-Samuel, and made himself available when midfielders and wingers needed support.

Ryan Tafazolli – 6 – As ever, Tafazolli was an aerial presence, helping Posh defend set pieces whilst providing a threat going forward. Struggled to stay with Conor Washington, who was making troublesome runs early on.

Rhys Bennett – 6 – The defender was comfortable on the ball, but also struggled to deal with the intensity of Rangers’ start.

Tyler Denton – 5 – Both of QPR’s early goals came from Denton’s side, and failed to offer anything significant going forward. The youngster will have better games to come for The Posh.

Siriki Dembele – 7 – Another impressive performance from the winger. Dembele’s tricky footwork was a problem for both fullbacks as the youngster switched sides. Had a great chance to pull one back, but Lumley saved well.

Alex Woodyard – 5 – The captain had a quiet game, Woodyard was calm in possession and good on the ball, but struggled to deal with QPR star man Luke Freeman on occasions.

Mark O’Hara – 6 – Despite playing the whole 90 minutes on Saturday, the midfielder played with as much energy and power as ever. He wasn’t able to get forward as often as Posh tried to deal with Freeman, but still managed to make some forward runs to make himself available in the box.

Joe Ward – 5 – Had a lot of crossing opportunities, but they were often blocked by the first man or claimed by the keeper. That being said, he made good defensive contributions to help Naismith.

Callum Cooke – 4 – Had very little of the ball in his 45 minutes. A couple of nice bits of footwork when on the ball, but he didn’t have the chance to show his true ability.

Ivan Toney – 6 – Posh played with Toney as the lone striker, with Cooke in behind, and he seemed to struggle in the first half. After Cummings came on at half time, Toney provided much more of a threat. A couple of efforts went close, and he linked up with his new teammates well in his first start.

Substitutes

Jason Cummings – 6 – The arrival of Cummings totally changed the flow of the game. Leistner and Baptiste struggled to deal with both Cummings and Toney as Posh grew back into the game. Had a great opportunity to pull one back, but failed to connect with the volley cleanly.

George Cooper – 5 – The playmaker only came on with 20 minutes left, so struggled to make his mark. Showed good footwork around the box and put a few teasing crosses in.

Matty Godden – 5 – Only came on for just over 15 minutes, but offered a physical presence as Rangers tired. Put a peach of a cross in for Cummings which should’ve pulled on back for Boro.
