Hull City are through to the next round of the League Cup after beating Sheffield United on penalties at Bramall Lane last night.
It was the missed penalty of Oliver Norwood, who Hull had three bids rejected for over the summer and later joined Sheffield United, which won the tie for the Tigers.
After joining the Blades on loan deal which will be made permanent in January, Norwood had this to say about Hull’s interest him in, “They did try to sign me” and later added, “I would have much rather have come to Sheffield United than go there, if I am honest”, as per Hull Live.
This sparked some harmless banter and jokes amongst the Hull and Sheffield United fans on Norwood’s debut yesterday. The Northern Ireland international did have a very impressive game for the Blades and won their Man of the Match. He looks to be a very shrewd signing for them.
However, there was an air of inevitability that he would miss his penalty against the club that had tried to sign him and his comments.
It is only the League Cup but Hull, who played a youthful side last night as Nigel Adkins made changes, can take a lot of confidence from the game. They are looking to bring in some loan signings before the end of August and have moved onto other targets after missing out on Norwood.
Here is how the Tigers’ fans reacted on Twitter to Norwood’s missed penalty-
We’d like to thank Oliver Norwood for giving Hull City and their fans a great start to his Sheffield United career. A wonderful high penalty deep into the crowd #hcafc #penaltyshootout

Norwood missing the penalty to lose the game for the team he signed for against the team he turned down. You couldn’t write it. #hcafc #twitterblades

Awfully good of Ollie Norwood to decide to blaze it miles over as a way of apologising for his unnecessary BS comments after signing for the blades. Top man 👏🏻😂 #hcafc

No better way to win then on penalties and for Norwood to sky his, written in the stars that one #hcafc

You’ve got to take some satisfaction from Norwood missing after his comments. It’s the little things… #hcafc

Norwood being the only one to miss was poetic. #hcafc
