Middlesbrough manager set to give youth a chance for Carabao Cup clash with Notts County

Middlesbrough manager Tony Pulis is set to give youth a chance this evening, with Boro facing League Two Notts County in the Carabao Cup first round.

In an interview with Middlesbrough’s official website, manager Tony Pulis has confirmed he will give youngsters a chance in tonight’s cup fixture against Kevin Nolan’s Notts County.

He said, “I think we’ve got some very good young players here and it will be nice for them”

“I think the supporters will understand that the squad’s not massive and we’ll be making lots of changes for the Notts County game.

“The lads look fit, but we might have to make a few changes and there’s lots of youngsters pushing for places, and there’s people on the bench who will be given the opportunity and the chance to see what they’re made of.”

16-year old Nathan Wood could make his competitive debut, and in doing so would become the youngest player to play for Middlesbrough in the club’s history. Along with Wood, there could be first starts for new signings Andy Lonergan and Paddy McNair.

But it is likely that Pulis would prefer to field a young team and give competitive minutes to players who impressed in pre-season. The likes of Djed Spence, Harry Chapman and Enes Mahmutovic could also be given a chance.

“We want to keep the momentum going, but I’m not going to flog these to death. I’m pretty confident the kids we’ve got will play well,” Pulis added.

“Tav (Marcus Tavernier) came on Saturday, Harry (Chapman) nearly got on too, so people like that – let’s give them a chance to see what they’re like.”
