Oxford United sign up Derby County goalkeeper on loan

Oxford United have signed Jonathan Mitchell on loan from Derby County until January as confirmed by the club website.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper, who has been capped once by the England U21s, started his career at Newcastle United but never made a senior appearance for them. After two loan spells with non-league side Workington, he left the club and joined Derby. He has also never made a league appearance for the Rams and went out on loan to Luton Town in 2016 where he made six appearances.

And now Mitchell will get another shot at a regular run in the first team after joining Oxford on loan for the next five months. The U’s suffered a blow when they found out that usual number one Simon Eastwood would be ruled out for two months after suffering a finger injury during the warm up for Saturday’s match against Fleetwood Town but they will be delighted to get Mitchell to cover for him while he’s out.

After the move was completed, Oxford head coach Karl Robinson said: “He is a good goalkeeper and will fit in perfectly. Obviously we have Scott Shearer who is great around the place and did well on Saturday, and we have Jack Stevens who is really promising. But you look at it and see we have to go to places like Portsmouth and Sunderland in the next few weeks and you know you need someone with a little bit of experience, which is why Jonathan fits the bill for us.”

“Easty had an operation at the weekend and all went well but while he is out we think we have made a really good singing and we look forward to working with Jonathan.”
