Bolton Wanderers snap up Birmingham City defender on loan

Bolton Wanderers have signed Jonathan Grounds on loan from Birmingham City for the season as confirmed by the club website.

The 30-year-old defender started his career at Middlesbrough but failed to break through into their first team. Instead he went on loan to teams such as Norwich City, Yeovil Town and Chesterfield before leaving the club in 2012 to join Oldham Athletic. After impressing for the Latics for the two years he was there, he signed for Birmingham and has since made over 150 appearances for the club.

But now he has completed a temporary move to Bolton, signing a loan deal that will keep him at the University of Bolton Stadium for the season. Even though he has been a key player for the Blues in his four years there, Bolton were able to move for him and have now got a player who could be key for them as they look to push up the Sky Bet Championship table.

Following the move, Grounds said: “I’m really excited to get going.”

“I’m really pleased that I’m at Bolton Wanderers and I’m looking forward to meeting everyone and getting going.”

“Speaking to the manager was definitely one of the things that helped me make my decision, as well as how much he wanted to get me up here.”

“It’s going to be a good place for me to come and play football and I’m ready for the challenge.”

Grounds could make his debut tomorrow night when Bolton face Leeds United in a Carabao Cup fixture.
