Paul Clement previews Reading’s Carabao Cup match against Birmingham City

Reading head coach Paul Clement has told the club website that he will be freshening up the line up for their Carabao Cup match against Birmingham City.

The Royals have had a poor start to the season. They opened up their season with a 2-1 loss against Derby County before following that up with another loss, this time a 1-0 reverse to Nottingham Forest. It’s an underwhelming start for Reading though it is worth baring in mind that they faced two teams expecting to be in the race for promotion.

Now it’s time for a break from the Sky Bet Championship as tomorrow night Reading will be taking on Championship rivals Birmingham City in the Carabao Cup. Ahead of this cup match, Clement did admit that he would be making some changes to the first team for this match. However he added that this doesn’t mean that this will be a weaker team.

He said: “Normally you have this midweek cup game in the first week of the season; we didn’t this year, but we’re looking forward to getting back out there now!”

“We will freshen the side up a bit and give some of the players who haven’t played much an opportunity.

“But it’ll certainly be a team that will be competitive and that can win the game.  In our squad, we don’t have a massive gulf in quality.  All of the players are competitive for their positions.

“It’s an opportunity to play another game and improve, and to turn our training work into performances and ultimately results.

“The games will start to come thick and fast.  We’ll dust ourselves down after Forest, as we do after any game when we haven’t got the result, and move on quickly and look forward to the next challenge.”
