Leeds United have started the season like a house on fire. Marcelo Bielsa has the players playing some fantastic football and he’s managed to transform Polish midfielder Mateusz Klich. Two goals in two games and two outstanding performances, the midfielder is the talk of Leeds United.
If only Thomas Christiansen had a player like Mateusz Klich last season…
The Polish midfielder arrived from FC Twente in a deal worth around £2 million, in today’s market that is nothing, and Leeds are looking at another bargain, Samu Saiz and Luke Ayling great examples of what can be done when players are scouted correctly. Victor Orta may have had a few flops and came in for some serious criticism, but Klich was never considered that, because he never got a fair chance. Eunan O’Kane was constantly chosen over Klich, work that one out.
Orta has had a very good window. He’s managed to undo many of his mistakes from last season, he had to because he made more than a few with recruitment, however. Marcelo Bielsa was his idea, his connection and he deserves credit for that. He also signed a few very good players. Samu Saiz, Adam Forshaw and Mateusz Klich all came in last season, and now Barry Douglas, Patrick Bamford, Jamal Blackman and Lewis Baker have all come in.
Klich has been a stand-out performer in a team that is exceeding expectations and filled with players performing at a very high level. He is controlling games, assisted by Samu Saiz in front of him and Phillips sitting deep. His high=pressing and ability to read opposition passes is quite brilliant and on the ball he is aware of situations around him. He’s bagged two very different goals in two games, both opening goals and both beautiful in their own way.
Away from the goal there was a moment that I loved from Klich tonight. He read and intercepted a pass inside the Derby pass, without looking he reversed his pass into the run of Samu Saiz who had peeled off the back of him. For those who really appreciate that, it was gold. Long may this continue.
