Ian Holloway believes West Brom will be “knocking on the door” for promotion and believes new summer signing Dwight Gayle will be key for them.

West Brom signed Dwight Gayle on a season-long loan from Newcastle with Salomón Rondón going the other way as part of a “loan-swap” agreement with Newcastle United and three-time Championship promotion winner Ian Holloway believes he will be the reason that West Brom will be “knocking on the door” for promotion.

West Brom haven’t had the brightest start to their season, as Yanic Wildschut scored a last-minute winner as Bolton snatched a dramatic opening-day 2-1 win on West Brom’s return to the second tier after eight seasons in the Premier League.

And in mid-week, West Bromwich Albion earned their first point of the Championship season as Matt Phillips’ late strike denied hosts Nottingham Forest victory in a game they had controlled.

In 2016 Dwight Gayle signed for Newcastle where he netted 23 goals in 32 appearances , he had the best minutes-per-goal ratio in the division, as Newcastle United won the Sky Bet Championship.

He scored six goals in all competitions during the 2017/18 season, laying on three assists for his team-mates as Newcastle United finished tenth in the Premier League.

Ian Holloway believes this is why Dwight Gayle will be the spearhead of West Brom’s promotion push as he said: Despite their poor start, they played as well as anyone I’ve seen play without winning. And so did Nottingham Forest, an absolutely pulsating game. Can West Brom get the goals is the question and they’ve made a brilliant signing in Dwight Gayle so I think they’ll be knocking on the door, not far off, Bolton produced a superb performance to beat them in the last minute.”
