Everton sign Barcelona defender – could this open the door for Leeds United target to move to Elland Road?

Everton have agreed a deal to bring in Barcelona defender Yerry Mina, but could this open the door for Leeds United to swoop for Everton centre-back Matty Pennington?

Leeds United have been linked with a return for defender Matty Pennington this summer, despite an unsuccessful loan spell at Elland Road last season.

Pennington signed a new deal at Everton earlier this summer, and has been offered first team chances throughout pre-season, possibly hinting that he was likely to stay for the season with more first team chances made available.

However, it seems that Pennington could be allowed to go on loan to get some more first team football under his belt. Leeds United are willing to offer this to him, with Marcelo Bielsa keen to bring in some more defensive reinforcements.

The arrival of Yerry Mina – who is almost certain to walk into the starting eleven after starring for Colombia in the World Cup in Russia this summer – means that Pennington will be even further down the pecking order at Everton.

So, should Leeds United use this to bring in Pennington? Well, United fans wouldn’t be happy, given their reaction to the links with Pennington. However, the 23-year-old provides important back up for Leeds, which they will need if they want to challenge for the Championship title. Pennington won’t be the ground-breaking deal that Leeds fans will be hoping for, but he would provide some valuable squad depth for United.
