Wigan have signed versatile Everton youngster Callum Connolly on a season-long loan deal, confirmed by the club website.

Wigan have signed versatile Everton youngster Callum Connolly on a season-long loan deal.

The defender had a loan spell with the club during the 2016-17 campaign, scoring two goals in 17 appearances.

The 20-year-old played as a right back in his initial spell with Wigan during the 2016-17 season but has the ability to play across defence and in midfield, like he did last season in an excellent loan spell with Ipswich Town, he scored four goals in 35 appearances.

Wigan boss Paul Cook said: “Callum is a bright young player, who had a good year with Ipswich Town in the Championship, and he will add to our midfield.”

Callum Connolly said this on re-joining Wigan and manager Paul Cook’s impact: “It feels like a long time ago since I was here but it’s good to be back under the new manager and to join in with the new recruits and hopefully have a positive season.”

“I know a few of the players here already from my time a couple of years ago but the manager was the big impact in me joining, so I’m just looking forward to the season and kicking on.”

“This is the first time I’ve met the manager but he seems a down to earth guy and someone I can get along with. He’s a scouser as well so that’ll help too.”

Callum Connolly also commented on his debut for Wigan two seasons ago: “On the day it was all just a bit of a blur but when I took a step back and realised what I’d done it was a great day and I just want it to happen again this year.”
