Derby County set to sign Scunthorpe United midfielder as he undergoes medical

Derby County are close to completing a deal to sign Scunthorpe United’s Duane Holmes as he is undergoing a medical at the club according to a report from journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 23-year-old midfielder, who was actually born in the USA, started his career at Huddersfield Town but only made 22 appearances there. He was also sent out on loan to Yeovil Town and Bury. He would sign for Scunthorpe in 2016 and has been a key player at Glanford Park ever since.

Holmes has been a big reason why Scunthorpe have qualified for the Sky Bet League One play-offs two years in a row and it was always inevitable that he was going to get spotted if they didn’t get promoted. And now it has finally happened with Derby taking a strong interest in him. The Rams are big fans of the player and it looks like they are close to wrapping up a deal to sign him. Holmes is currently at Derby undergoing a medical and should no serious problems emerge, the deal should be a done one.

The East Midlands based side will be hoping that signing a player from lower down the league ladder works out. Holmes has played in this division before for Huddersfield but they obviously thought he wasn’t going to be good enough for them, hence why he was released and Scunthorpe were able to sign him up. But the time spent with Scunthorpe has improved him as a player and this could end up being a smart move for Derby.
