Birmingham to sign Aston Villa midfielder in loan deal

The Daily Mail understands that Gary Gardner is to cross the divide and leave Aston Villa for Birmingham City on loan. The 26-year-old has struggled to make an impact in the first team at Villa Park, and is primed to complete his seventh loan transfer away from the club.

The financial situation at Birmingham means that they are only able to secure loan signings and free transfers at this moment in time. Whilst they have until the end of the month to complete such deals, Garry Monk is keen to get them across the line as quickly as possible. They began their Sky Bet Championship season with a dramatic 2-2 home draw with Norwich City, and are now set to add Gardner to their ranks.

Since 2011, Gardner has only started 23 league matches for Villa and is highly likely to leave at the end of his current contract. Coventry City, Sheffield Wednesday, Brighton & Hove Albion, Nottingham Forest (twice) and Barnsley are all clubs that have benefitted from the player on loan in the past.

Omar Bogle and Lee Camp joined the club yesterday from Cardiff City on a loan and permanent switch respectively. Birmingham are looking to move on the likes of David Stockdale and Jonathan Grounds before the deadline too. They need players off the books to comply with Financial Fair Play rulings.

Seeing a player switch from Aston Villa to Birmingham City in this day and age perhaps is not so much of a shock as it would have been in the past. Ultimately, he is a player in need of football, and the club across the city are seemingly able to provide that better than his parent club can.
