Former Ipswich Town striker has “soft spot” for East Anglian rivals Norwich City

Former Ipswich Town striker Jordan Rhodes has “always had a soft spot” for East Anglian rivals Norwich City despite his Ipswich upbringing.

Rhodes began his career in Barnsley after being born in Oldham. The talented striker moved to Suffolk with his family when his dad, Andy, was appointed as Goalkeeping Coach in 2004 and Rhodes progressed through the youth system before breaking into the first team in December 2007.

Having represented the Blues youth sides, Rhodes made his debut as a late substitute against Burnley. The 28-year-old scored his first goal for the Suffolk outfit in April 2008 to seal a draw after coming on as a substitute against Cardiff City.

However, with first team chances limited, Rhodes spent time on-loan at Oxford United and Rochdale before making a temporary move to Brentford. Rhodes departed Portman Road in July 2009 having scored just one goal from ten Sky Bet Championship appearances.

Three permanent clubs later – and one loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday – and Rhodes has signed for Ipswich Town’s arch-nemesis, Norwich City.

Having been raised up in Scotland, Rhodes experienced his adolescent years while at Portman Road. Although the talismanic striker has stirred Blues supporters with his recent comments since signing for the Canaries by seemingly forgotten his Blue roots.

Speaking ahead of City’s first home game of the Sky Bet Championship campaign, Rhodes said: “I’m really, really looking forward to seeing the home crowd going to Carrow Road in the colours of Norwich rather than being an opposition player.

“Norwich is a club that I’ve always had a soft spot for. My dad signed for Norwich on-loan  some 20 years ago now so it was a proud moment.”
