Could Stoke City be set to make the biggest signing in the Championship this summer?

Over the next 24 hours, you’ll see fans suggest that it’s imperative that their club bring in a number of big name players, that they get deals over the line and aim to make their signings of the summer; but with Stoke City, it’s quite the reverse, as their biggest signing would be keeping their goalkeeper Jack Butland.

Of course, Stoke City could have let Butland move to one of the Premier League’s big clubs for a fee of say £20/25m – but if they did that, they’d be left scrambling for a new goalkeeper and most importantly, they could risk losing a safe pair of hands between the sticks.

By keeping Butland, Stoke City will ensure that they have a leader, an England international and most importantly somebody who will be incredibly driven to ensure the club reach the Premier League as quickly as possible, so he can keep up his competition with Everton’s Jordan Pickford for the number one shirt with England.

If they can manage to stop Butland from moving away during the next 24 hours, it’s arguable that Stoke City may have made the Championship signing of the summer – as after all, if they can go back up and Butland can play a huge part in the clubs success; it will not only increase his potential value but will help to improve him mentally and physically as a goalkeeper in a different type of league to the Premier League, which will be much more physically demanding and also, will see him under increased pressure to perform.

We will see if Butland stays – but if he does, it’d definitely be the signing of the summer for Stoke City.
