Aston Villa ready to bid £5m for Wigan Athletic midfielder

Aston Villa are set to make a bid worth £5m for Wigan Athletic’s Nick Powell according to a report from TeamTalk.

The 24-year-old midfielder, who was voted as the 11th Best Player in the EFL last season in our Top 50 Players vote, started his career at Crewe Alexandra and was hailed as one of the best players to come from their famous academy. He would then be snapped up by Manchester United and while he had a successful loan at Wigan, his career stalled following poor stints at Leicester City and Hull City. He then returned to the Latics in 2016 and has been performing to the high standards he had set himself at Crewe.

And this, as well as an impressive performance against Sheffield Wednesday where he scored in a 3-2 win, has attracted the interest of Aston Villa. With the club getting new owners recently, they are ready to invest in their squad again especially is Jack Grealish ends up leaving as expected. Their head coach Steve Bruce is a big fan of Powell and has been asking to make a bid of £5m for him and this report suggests that has now been approved.

While Wigan would want to keep one of their star players, especially as they don’t want to get relegated right back to Sky Bet League One, they may be tempted to sell Powell. He only has one year left on his current contract and cashing in now would mean they won’t lose him on a free next year.
