Lewis Moult reacts to Preston North End’s opening day win over QPR

Preston North End’s Lewis Moult has told the club website that he enjoyed their 1-0 Sky Bet Championship opening day win against QPR.

The Lilywhites went into this match hoping to get off to a good start. They are usually in the upper part of the Championship table but want to push into the play-offs this season. For QPR, they were starting a new era with Steve McClaren taking charge of his first game after replacing Ian Holloway as head coach.

In the end, just one goal would decide this match. In the second half, Alan Browne’s looping header which find its way into the net and QPR were unable to respond. This meant that Preston would kick off the season with a win and Moult said that the team enjoyed the game and performance and hopes they can replicate it for their next match. They will be facing recently relegated Swansea City next Saturday.

Moult said: “It was a clean sheet, three points and all in all I thought we played well,”

“Especially the first half, we moved the ball and we created chances. We maybe lacked that final shot on target or clear-cut chance, but that will come. It is the first game of the season, but I thought we played really well.”

“Personally, I really enjoyed it. I felt a lot fitter and stronger – which I knew would be the case after I completed a pre-season – and that helped me.”

“Getting that understanding on the pitch takes time,”

“The more and more I play and we get familiar with each other, the better it will become. Training is different to game day, you can do all the drills and scenarios you want, but it is different in a match.”

“I thought some of the link up play between the forwards was brilliant and I really enjoyed it. There is nothing like competitive football – it is hard to recreate in training; the amount of times I have done attack versus defence and you don’t really get a shot is crazy.”

“In games it is a lot quicker, defenders defend differently than what they would in training, but it is up to us to keep working on it and repetition is key; the more we build these connections, the more we will be on the same wavelength.”
