Leeds United and Aston Villa set to battle it out for Championship midfielder

Leeds United and Aston Villa are both interested in signing Millwall midfielder George Saville, according to the Daily Mail.

The Daily Mail report that Leeds United and Aston Villa will fight it out to sign midfielder George Saville from Millwall, with both clubs hoping to do a deal before the end of the permanent transfer window.

The 25-year-old starred for Millwall last year, after joining from Wolves in Summer 2017. Saville played 44 times in the Championship last season, and scored ten from midfield. He joined for only £350,000 last season, and will make a substantial profit on the midfielder if they sell him.

Sheffield United scouts reportedly attended Millwall’s 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough yesterday, and could join the race for the midfielder too.

Saville is a box-to-box midfielder, and can play further forward if needs be. On occasions, he has played up front or in behind the striker when with both Wolves and Millwall.

Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa is keen to bring in a new midfielder, after Ronaldo Vieira joined Sampdoria for £7m earlier this week. Midfielder Adam Forshaw’s injury also means that Bielsa will be looking for new midfield reinforcements before the end of the window.

However, Millwall will be reluctant to sell the midfielder if they don’t have a replacement lined up. Even then, it will probably take a hefty fee for them to let go of Saville, as was a vital part of Neil Harris’ side that finished 8th last season, and he will be keen to keep him for this season.
