Leeds United were just a whisker away from signing Championship winger

In an exclusive interview with the Yorkshire Evening Post, Andrea Radrizzani revealed that Leeds United were very close to signing Brentford winger Florian Jozefzoon.

Dutch winger Florian Jozefzoon joined Derby County from Brentford last month, but was on the brink of agreeing a deal to join Leeds United. The Rams spent £3m on Jozefzoon last month, joining Frank Lampard at Pride Park.

However, Radrizzani revealed that United were in pole position to sign Jozefzoon.

He told the Yorkshire Evening Post:

“We received the contract from the club (Brentford) and we had written approval from the agent. Then, on the way to the medical check here, they change ideas and go to another club. Honestly, I’m happy he didn’t come here. Good luck to him but we don’t want people like this.”

Jozefzoon played 58 Championship games for Brentford after joining from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in January 2017. He scored eight goals and assisted ten at Brentford, but impressed more than his stats imply.

Radrizzani implied he was more frustrated about the Jozefzoon saga than the Matej Vydra saga. Jozefzoon’s decision to move to Derby despite having a medical arranged at Thorp Arch disappointed him, and is now happy that he didn’t move to Elland Road.

United instead opted to look at different options, and have since brought in young winger Jack Harrison from Manchester City, as manager Marcelo Bielsa made the most of Pep Guardiola’s offer to help him build a Championship squad capable of achieving promotion.
